Our support

The Care Leaver service will

  • Make sure you know how to apply for any benefits that you are entitled to
  • Help you in accessing a rent deposit scheme if you qualify; this is a loan
  • Provide you with a Leaving Care Grant of up to £2,000, which is used to set up your home so you can afford basics like furniture, a bed, washing machine and furnishings
  • Give you practical support in helping you to move in, look after and maintain your home
  • Offer you advice and support about managing your money and your tenancy (the agreement between you and your landlord)
  • Pay your TV license for the first year
  • Help you hire a van to support you with the move

Care leavers Council Tax discount

As a care leaver you may be eligible for a discount on your Council Tax bill. To be eligible to apply for this exemption you will need to:

  • Have been looked after by Wokingham Borough Council
  • Be under the age of 25
  • Live in the borough
  • Be liable to pay Council Tax

Discount percentage

  • If you live alone, you will be awarded a 100% discount.
  • If you live with one other person who is liable to pay the Council Tax, then the reduction will be 50%.
