Part-time timetables
Part-time timetables
A part-time timetable should only be used in very exceptional circumstances.
It is when a school and parents agree for a child to go to school for fewer hours or days than usual for full-time education. This should only be for a short, specific time to meet a child’s individual needs.
A part-time timetable must:
- be agreed in writing between you and the school
- be for a limited time
- have regular review dates
A school cannot set up a part-time timetable without your written permission.
It must include a date for when your child will return to full-time education, either at school or through alternative provision.
Schools must report part-time timetables to Wokingham Borough Council.

Children in specific circumstances
For some children, extra steps must be taken before a part-time timetable can be set up.
Children with an EHCP
- The school must consult with the SEND Team as well as get written agreement from parents for a part-time timetable.
- If a child or young person’s needs have changed, an early annual review should be considered.
Children in Care
- The child’s Personal Education Plan (PEP) must be reviewed.
- The child’s Social Worker and the Virtual School must be consulted.
- Written consent must be given by those with parental responsibility.
Children in Need or with a Child Protection Plan
- The school must consult the child’s Social Worker and agree on the part-time timetable.
- The timetable should only be put in place after a core group meeting.
Pupils in Year 11
- The school must consult the Elevate NEET Prevention Team for advice about education, employment, or training.
