Weeks 6 to 16: starting the needs assessment

When we have agreed to do an EHC needs assessment, we will gather more advice and information from people who work with your child or young person.

We may also arrange specialist assessments such as speech and language therapy, occupational therapy or social care.

We will involve you and your child or young person in this process.

All of the information and advice gathered in the EHC needs assessment will go to the decision making panel. This is to decide if your child needs an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).

Find out more about our EHCP decision making panels.

An EHC needs assessment does not always lead to an EHCP. Sometimes, the information we gather during the needs assessment can help us decide whether your child or young person’s needs can be met by their nursery, school or college through special educational needs support.
