Weeks 1 to 6: deciding if an EHC assessment is necessary

Once we receive your application, we must decide whether an EHC needs assessment is necessary.

We will speak to your child or young person's nursery, school or college. All of the information will then go to the decision making panel to decide if your child needs an EHC needs assessment.

Find out more about our EHCP decision making panels.

When you'll get a decision

We will let you know our decision within 6 weeks of you asking for an EHC needs assessment.

If we agree an EHC needs assessment is necessary, we will let you know the next steps.

If we decide not to carry out an EHC assessment, we will let you know why and give you advice on how your child or you, as the young person, can still get the support you need.

If you disagree with a decision

If you do not agree with our decision, you have the right to appeal. Find out more about what to do if you do not agree with our decision.
