Weeks 1 to 6: deciding if an EHC assessment is necessary

Once we receive your application, we must decide whether an EHC needs assessment is necessary.

We will speak to your child or young person's school and consider all the evidence you have provided to help us make a decision. We will let you know within 6 weeks to confirm our decision.

If we agree an EHC needs assessment is necessary, we will let you know the next steps.

If we decide not to carry an EHC assessment, we will let you know why and give you advice on how your child or you, as the young person, can still get the support you need.

If you disagree with a decision

If you do not agree with our decision, you have the right to appeal. Find out more about what to do if you do not agree with our decision.
