Which Ofsted register to join
Childminders must be registered with Ofsted in order to look after children under the age of 8 years old.
When childminding:
- A child until they have reached the end of the reception year a childminder must register on the Early Years Register
- Children aged 5-7 years a childminder must register on the compulsory part of the Childcare Register
- Only children over the age of 8 years, a childminders may choose to register on the voluntary part of the Childcare Register

Exempt from registering with Ofsted
If a child carer provides care where a child does not stay with them for more than two hours a day, even if the childcare service is open for longer than two hours then the provider is not required to register with Ofsted.
