Direct payments for carers

A carer is a person of any age who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or someone close to them due to an illness or disability. Caring can take a variety of forms from personal care to practical help with shopping or completing paperwork.

Direct payment provide support to carers in various aspects of their lives, helping to ease some of the pressures associated with their care responsibilities.

A carer’s direct payment is either a one-off payment or as a regular monthly payment to buy services or support to continue being a carer. It is not considered an income and cannot be taken into account if a carer is being assessed for benefits.
