How food waste works

We provide a:

• Small indoor food waste caddy for your kitchen
• Larger lockable black outdoor food waste bin to put out for collection 

If you live in a flat you can put your food waste into the larger red wheeled bin, in the bin store. 

Find out where you can collect your food waste caddy and bin from. 

How to use the food waste caddy and outdoor bin

1. Collect food in your food waste caddy.
2. When the caddy is full, put the food waste and liner if used in the larger outdoor food waste bin.

3. Make sure you leave the food waste bin out by 6.30am on the collection day.

4. Position the food waste bin on the edge of your property as near to the kerb as possible without causing obstruction.

What happens to the food waste 

Food waste is sent to an anaerobic digestion plant where:

• Any plastic bag or newspaper liner material is removed
• The food is recycled into electricity and fertiliser

Using food waste to make compost

Some food waste can be used to make compost at home. You can get composting bins at Getcomposting.com as well as at local garden centres. 

How can I dispose of compostable packaging?

If you don't compost at home, place your compostable packaging in your general rubbish bin or bag for disposal.
