Advice for lowering your bills
Save energy and lower your bills at home
The Government's advice to get ready for winter:
- Turn down radiators in rooms you aren’t using to save up to £40 a year
- Bleed your radiators
- Get your boiler serviced
- Reduce your hot water tank temperature to 60°C to save up to £10 per year
- Find and fix draughts to save up to £40 a year
The Government's advice for summer savings:
- Using your tumble dryer less could save up to £50 a year
- Reduce your boiler flow temperature to save up to £60 a year
- Wash clothes at a lower temperature to save up to £20 a year
- Install a smart meter to help you see what you’re spending
- Insulate your hot water cylinder to save up to £40 a year
- Turn appliances off at the socket to save up to £40 a year
- Install smart thermostats and heating controls to save up to £40 a year
- Install an energy efficient shower head to save £40 a year
Tailored advice for your home
We've launched launched a new Home Decarbonisation Advice Service. This can help you improve your home, save money on bills and lower emissions.
You can contact the council’s Customer Service team on the website or by phone on 0118 974 6000.
You'll then be signposted to the relevant information they need, or referred to the council’s Energy team who will be able to give more detailed advice.
Residents can also access the free Parity Projects Plan Builder App. This tool helps you know potential savings on improvements to your home.
Warm Home Discount Scheme
The Warm Home Discount Scheme has closed. It will reopen in October 2024.
Get help with energy-saving improvements
You can apply for help with home energy-saving improvements if you get certain benefits, live in social housing or are on a low income. Find out more about:
- the Energy Company Obligation if you’re on benefits or live in social housing
- the Great British Insulation Scheme if your property is within a certain energy rating and council tax band
- the Home Upgrade Grant if you own a home in England with no boiler
