Recognising the signs
It can be difficult to spot signs as often people try to hide what is happening due to fear, shame, worry about what will happen if they tell someone else, or a lack of understanding about what constitutes abuse. However, there are some common indicators to look out for:
- Frequent unexplained injuries or bruises
- Changes in behaviour, such as becoming withdrawn or anxious
- Sudden loss of interest in activities which were previously enjoyed
- Constantly checking in with their partner (or family member) or feeling afraid around them
- Unusual explanations for injuries or absences from school, college or social events.
