Forms of abuse
Physical abuse involves any form of physical harm or violence, such as hitting, punching, slapping or choking. It also includes the use of weapons or objects to cause harm.
Emotional abuse aims to manipulate and control someone’s emotions. It includes constant criticism, humiliation, name-calling, threats and isolation from friends and family.
Sexual abuse involves any non-consensual sexual activity, including forced intercourse, unwanted touching or coercion.
Economic abuse is where one person controls another’s financial resources, limiting their access to money, preventing them from working, or using money as a means of control.
Coercive and Controlling behaviour is where someone uses threats, intimidation or force to make someone do something against their will or to control their actions. It can include isolating the person from family, friends and other support networks; constantly monitoring where the person is and checking their messages, emails or social media accounts without their consent; guilt tripping the person or making them feel responsible for the abuser’s actions.
