Types of short breaks

There are 3 types of short breaks services available for children and young people with disabilities:

  • Universal services - these are for all children and young people
  • Targeted services - these are only for children and young people with disabilities
  • Specialist services - these are for children and young people with disabilities who need the most support because they have a complex disability

Short break activities could be:

  • daytime care for children with disabilities in their homes or elsewhere
  • overnight care for children with disabilities in their homes or elsewhere
  • educational or leisure activities for children with disabilities outside their homes
  • services to help parents or carers in the evenings, at weekends and during the school holidays
