Assessing your needs as a carer
You can get a carers assessment
A carer’s assessment helps to find out if you can get support to care for someone. It creates a plan to support you, which may include practical help and signposting to local groups where you can talk to others.
Benefits of having a carer's assessment
Gives you the opportunity to:
- Discuss how your caring role impacts your life and wellbeing.
- Explore the support you need to manage your responsibilities effectively.
- Look at what financial support may be available to you.
- Look into how you can have a short break from your caring role
What you need to know
- You do not need the permission of the person you care for.
- The person you care for does not have to have help or an assessment from adult social care.
- If both parties want to, a carer’s assessment can be done jointly with the person you care for needs assessment.
- Having a carers assessment will not affect whether you receive a carer's allowance.
