Arrange a break from caring

Being a unpaid carer can be hard on your body and mind, so looking after your own health and wellbeing is important. Taking time for yourself, whether for a few hours, a few days, or regular longer breaks, can make a big difference.

These breaks, often called short breaks, respite, or ‘replacement care,’ are designed to give unpaid carers time away from their responsibilities. You can take a break knowing that the person you care for is being well looked after.

Respite services do come with a cost, but the person receiving care may qualify for financial help from us to cover all or part of the cost, depending on their assessed care needs and financial situation. Read how to get a needs assessment for the person you care for.

For short breaks for disabled children and young people go to our short breaks explained page.

The following pages provide an overview of the different types of short breaks and respite care services available.
