Ways to reduce your footprint - transport

Drive less

Cutting down on the miles you drive is one of the best things you can do for reducing carbon emissions. Organise your trips to get more done on each outing, walk or bike when distances are shorter, and use public transportation as much as possible. Visit My Journey our borough-wide active and sustainable travel behaviour change campaign that aims to help and inspire Wokingham residents, employees and visitors of all ages to walk, scoot, cycle or use public transport.

Go easy on the acceleration and brakes

How much you drive is not the only factor to consider. Acceleration burns more fuel, so applying the brakes and speeding up is less fuel efficient than maintaining a smooth, even speed. For motorway trips try using the cruise control to maintain an even speed and help conserve fuel.

Regularly service your car and keep tyres properly inflated

When your car runs efficiently, it uses less energy. When properly inflated, tyres require less energy to achieve and maintain speed while driving. If the pressure is too low, your car is sluggish and burns more fuel than necessary.

Carshare

Car sharing a ride to work every day or other trips can reduce your carbon footprint by about 900kg of CO2e every year.

Limiting flying as much as you can

Travelling by air releases far more carbon emissions than other modes of transport. To help put this in perspective, a single flight to Edinburgh from London produces 3 times more carbon emissions than if the same journey was made by train. If you can fly less often, it’s an effective way to reduce your carbon footprint.  If you do fly, try to ensure the flight is non-stop as taking off and landing burns more jet fuel than simply cruising at altitude.

Purchasing an Electric vehicle

It is easy to tell people to drive less, but that might not be possible for everyone, driving an electric vehicle and charging your electric car at home can help eliminate the carbon emissions that your conventional car produces. Electric Car Charging Points - For electric vehicle (EV) owners, charging is crucial. Visit the Zap-Map website for step-by-step guides on EV charging, power ratings, connectors, and where to find charging points in the Borough.
