Ways to reduce your footprint - food
Food
Eat more plant-based food and less meat
Eating less meat and eating mostly fruits, veggies, grains, and beans or switching to lower impact meats such as chicken, eggs or pork is the most effective way to reduce your dietary footprint. To put it into context, 100 grams of protein from peas emits just 0.4 kilograms of CO2e emissions. To get the same amount of protein from beef, emissions would be nearly 90 times higher.
The Wokingham Vegan Market in the town centre runs every other month on the second Sunday of the month. The market stalls sell a wide range of products; hot food, cakes, pastries, gifts and eco-friendly products. To find out more, please go to the wokingham vegan market website.
Shop locally and buy seasonal foods
Transporting food from far away, whether by truck, ship, rail or plane, uses fossil fuels for fuel and for cooling to keep foods in transit from spoiling.
Wokingham town centre has market days every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 09:00-15:00. The stalls feature street food and an array of stalls which include the highest quality fresh food, plants, local produce, crafts, luxury items and quirky keepsakes.
Buy food in bulk
When possible which can often work out cheaper in the long term and use reusable containers to store food.
Maya’s Refillables in Wokingham offers refillable zero waste solutions to help you make you reduce your carbon footprint. Visit Maya's refillables for more information.
Reduce your food waste
By planning meals ahead of time, freezing the excess and reusing leftovers and try and limit purchasing foods wrapped in plastic and non-recyclable packaging.
Donate surplus food to a foodbank
Foodbanks rely on your donations of food, your generosity means that families, adults and children, who can't afford to feed themselves do not go hungry and helps stop surplus food being wasted. Visit Help with food for locations of our Borough’s foodbanks.
Compost
Try to compost your food waste if possible and place food waste in your black food caddy to be collected weekly.
