Current project status

To maximise efficiency, the intention is to deliver the South Wokingham Distributor Road (SWDR) Central Section and Western Gateway Phase 1 as a single project, which will run from the new roundabout at Waterloo Road at the end of the Eastern Gateway section, through to the existing Tesco Roundabout at Finchampstead Road.

The scheme is currently in the final stages of detailed design and planning condition discharge.

Planning application

A planning application was submitted in November 2019. Full details can be found on the planning application portal under planning reference 192928.

Significant survey work has been undertaken including: ecology, ground condition, archaeology and tree surveys to inform the Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Transport modelling has also been undertaken to inform the Transport Impact Assessment (TIA) for the scheme. We have also engaged with landowners and other stakeholders.

Updated planning documents were submitted in December 2020. These can be viewed via the planning portal (ref above). Planning consent was granted at a special planning committee meeting on 18th May 2021.

Design and construction

Following granting of the planning consent, work is now on-going to progress the detailed design for the scheme. We are working closely with developers to ensure both road and housing proposals complement each other.

A detailed construction programme is to be developed on completion of the detailed design and transfer of land from the developers.
