Licence required to install traffic count equipment on a public highway

Application to install traffic count equipment on the public highway

You'll need a licence if you want to install traffic count equipment on or over the public highway, including cameras. Public Highway includes the verge, footway, footpath, carriageway and street furniture.

An individual licence is required for each installation. For example, if 3 x Automatic Traffic Counters (ATCs) and 2 x Cameras were being installed, 5 licences would be required in total.

Your application will be delayed and possibly rejected if you do not pay the appropriate amount of the fee and submit all the required information needed to assess your application.

Please allow up to 5 working days for your application to be processed.

Fees

The cost of a licence is £56.70.

Payment will be requested once the application has been assessed and approved.

Payment is made via our online payments page or an invoice can be issued on request.

How to apply

You can apply online for a licence. During the application process you will need to provide:

  • Google Maps Image highlighting the works location
  • Scanned copy of a valid public liability insurance certificate for a minimum of £10 million
  • Method statement
  • Risk assessment

Street light column

If you want to attach your equipment to a street light column, this must be highlighted during the application process. Separate approval will need to be sought from the Street Lighting Team for this. Additional fees may apply.
