Wokingham Borough Council adopts Community Vision

Wokingham Borough Council has approved an ambitious Community Vision 2035 that has been produced by partners from across the borough.

Representatives from local businesses, community organisations, the Youth Council, educational institutions, and healthcare worked together to gather community views and aspirations in order to agree the long-term vision. This collective effort ensures that the vision is holistic and reflects the diverse needs and aspirations of the entire community.

Leader of the Council Stephen Conway said: “This vision is not a council document; it is the product of a community steering group that worked tirelessly to understand the borough and its communities. I’m proud that the council is set to sign-up to it and to commit itself to working with partners to make it a reality.”

The Wokingham Community Vision 2035 aims to improve residents' quality of life through six ambitions: 

• Living happy, healthy and independent lives; community wellbeing focuses on enhancing healthcare, recreational facilities, and support programs
• Protecting and improving our places; sustainable development ensures environmentally sustainable growth via energy efficiency, recycling, and better public transport
• Economic success that everyone is part of; economic growth supports local businesses and job creation, business hubs, and workforce development
• Making it easy for people to access the things they want and need; through innovative services that improve public services through technology and initiatives
• Building and maintaining great communities; inclusive communities promote social integration, affordable housing, and volunteerism
• Providing fair opportunities for everyone; with education and lifelong learning provide excellent education and ongoing learning opportunities

These ambitions aim to create a vibrant, sustainable, and inclusive Wokingham by 2035.

The formal launch of the Community Vision 2035 is scheduled for early 2025, with detailed plans and activities to be unveiled shortly. This launch will mark the beginning of an exciting journey, involving extensive community engagement to ensure that the vision reflects the aspirations and needs of all Wokingham residents.

Cllr Conway added: "The Community Vision 2035 is a milestone for Wokingham borough. It embodies our commitment to creating a borough where everyone can prosper. We believe that by focusing on wellbeing, sustainability, economic growth, and innovation, we can build a brighter future for our community. We look forward to working with residents, businesses, and stakeholders to bring this vision to life."

The Community Vision 2035 was developed with input and collaboration from 18 partners across the borough, ensuring a comprehensive and inclusive approach. These partnerships have been instrumental in identifying key priorities and developing actionable plans that address the unique needs of our diverse community. The collaborative effort highlights the strength and unity of our borough, demonstrating our collective commitment to a shared future.
