Boost your digital skills at free library sessions

Wokingham Borough Council is offering digital skills sessions at local libraries, providing hands-on support to residents with their technological queries. 

Led by friendly volunteers, these sessions are free to attend and are designed to help everyone improve their digital literacy and confidence in a welcoming and supportive environment. 

Digital skills sessions last for an hour and a half and cover a wide range of topics, which can be tailored to meet the needs of the individual, with no need to book in advance. 

You can learn more about: 

• Using a phone, laptop or tablet 

• How to print and scan 

• Using the library Wi-Fi 

• How to use the Libby app for audiobooks 

• Creating CVs 

Whether you are looking to learn how to use WhatsApp, find bus timetables, navigate PressReader or get the most out of your Kindle or iPad, the volunteers are happy to help. 

Sessions are currently running at: 

• Woodley Library: First Monday of the month and the first Thursday of every month, from 10am to 11.30am

• Lower Earley Library: Second Tuesday of every month and the fourth Monday of every month, from 10am to 11.30am 

• Twyford Library: First Friday of every month, from 10am to 11.30am

• Finchampstead Library: Second Friday of every month, from 10am to 11.30am

Helping residents to stay connected

Cllr Rachel Bishop-Firth, executive member for resident services, inclusion and fighting poverty, said: “These digital skills sessions have been running successfully for many months now and have helped dozens of residents to feel more confident.

"It means they can access the full range of services our libraries have to offer and opens up a range of possibilities, including helping people to find employment and contact friends or family members. 

“The sessions were introduced in response to feedback from library visitors, who expressed a need for more support and guidance with their phones and tablets. Wokingham Borough Council is committed to meeting this demand and helping residents stay connected and informed in today’s digital world.” 

Other support available at libraries 

AbilityNet holds sessions at Lower Earley on the fourth Friday of each month from 10am to 11.30am. The charity has been helping older and disabled people with their computers, mobiles and tablets for more than 20 years. 

They can help with setting up new equipment, using the internet, giving advice on how to stay safe online and much more. To find out more, call 0800 048 7642 or send the charity an email. 

Residents who would like to learn more about how to use the NHS app are invited to attend sessions at Wokingham Library. Sessions take place on the fourth Monday of the month, from 3.30pm to 4.30pm.
