I am requesting information on the lighting classification applied to footways and cycleways in your administrative area. Could you please provide:
1. The lighting classes (eg P1, P2, P3, C4, etc.) used for footways within your administrative area, specifying if these differ for:
a) Primary footways (high-footfall areas such as city centres, high streets, or transport hubs): We do not have a formal policy but our guidance to designers takes into account the need to support the Council’s Climate Emergency Action Plan by specifying lighting class P5 as the default desirable class for all footways, footpaths and cycleways unless there is sufficient reason to choose a higher class.
b) Secondary footways (medium footfall, e.g. residential and suburban streets): See above
c) Tertiary footways (low footfall areas such as cul-de-sacs, alleyways, or rural paths): See above
2. The lighting class used for cycleways, particularly where they are:
a) Dedicated cycleways (physically separated from roads and footways): See above
b) Shared footway/cycleway routes: See above
3. If different lighting classes are applied depending on location (urban vs rural), please provide a breakdown: See above
4. Any internal policies, guidance, or strategy documents that define or inform how lighting classes are selected for footways and cycleways: We have a Design Process, Requirements and Specification Guide with Appendices and Addendum as attached.
