Since March 2019, the following schemes that include cycling provision have been delivered in the Borough.
• A329 London Road cycleway, providing a link for cyclists from the Coppid Beech/A329M roundabout into the town centre. Its length is circa 1,1km and forms part of the National Cycle Network route 422 (NCN422). The scheme was completed in November 2020 and it costed approximately £900,000. Part of the construction works including but not limited to main road resurfacing, painting of cycleway, footways widening and signage.
• Arborfield Cross Relief Road shared use cycleway (bridleway, footpath, and cycleway). The scheme length is circa 2,4km linking A327 Reading Road to A327 Eversley Road intending to provide traffic relief in Arborfield and Arborfield Cross and the surrounding rural lanes. The scheme was completed in November 2020 and it costed approximately £396,000.
• Winnersh Relief Road Phase 2 shared footway/cycle way. The length of Phase 2 is 750m, linking the new junction on B3030 King Street Lane to the new junction on the A329 Reading Road at the M4 overbridge. The road opened to traffic in May 2021 and it costed around £8,500,000.
In addition to the above, in summer 2020 the My journey team installed the 4th bike hub in Shinfield (St Mary’s Junior School). The cost of the scheme was £7,443 including the purchase of bike hub, preparation of the site and lay foundation at Shinfield St Mary’s Junior School.
With regard to the planned cycling infrastructure provision for the next financial year this entails the following schemes:
• Woodley - Reading Active Travel Route – review preliminary design drawings maintaining the two-way operation of Woodlands Avenue
• A329 Reading Road between Aspen Place and Winnersh Relief Road Roundabouts – outline design stage
• A327 between Eastern Relief Road and Observer Way – inception phase
• Bader Way between Mohawk Way and Showcase Cinema Car Park; the section up to A3290 has been delivered with the remainder due to be completed this year
In addition, Wokingham Borough Council is progressing with the development of the borough wide Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP). The LCWIP is a strategic approach that analyses local travel patterns to help identify where best to invest in cycling and walking infrastructure. An initial LCWIP consultation was undertaken last spring on the main barriers that prevent people from walking or cycling and a second consultation is due to take place late spring/early summer on detailed cycling and walking network plans and infrastructure proposals. These will present a coherent cycling and walking network plan for the borough which will ideally be delivered over a 10-year period.
Finally, please note that work is also underway on the update of our Local Transport Plan 4 and the review of all associated sustainable policies.
