1. Current statistics of Deaf people living in the borough, city or county across the UK as at today’s date;
• We would particularly like to know the total number of Deaf people: The England and Wales Census 2021 Upper Tier Local Authority Data
https://www.ons.gov.uk/datasets/TS024/editions/2021/versions/3/filter-outputs/a00efb22-e153-4391-ad66-0644b1fbd49d#get-data states that in Wokingham there were 43 people who identified having BSL as their main language.
421 people within Wokingham Borough have currently chosen to be registered as having a hearing loss.
We do not store figures on the register of whether or not they use British Sign Language.
• Of that total, how many are aged 18-50 years: Of the total registered, 43 are aged 18-50
• How many are under the age of 18: We have 3 under 18's registered as having a hearing loss. We have 2 children who use BSL
Please note that for the purposes of our research, ‘Deaf people’ refers to anyone who is deaf, hard of hearing, deaf with additional needs, and who uses British Sign Language to communicate.
