Casual vacancies
Details regarding current vacancies for Borough Councillors
What is a casual vacancy?
A casual vacancy arises when an elected member no longer holds their position due to reasons such as death, resignation, disqualification, or losing eligibility to remain elected.
The local authority must issue a public notice when a casual vacancy occurs. This notice will specify the area where the vacancy has arisen and include any relevant details, such as the number of electors needed to request a by-election, if applicable.
The Proper Officer is responsible for retaining any election requests (as per the Local Government Act 1972, Section 225). Documents submitted under this section must be made available for public inspection and copying (Local Government Act 1972, Section 228(5)).
