Forced marriage
Forced marriage is where one, or both parties are threatened, bullied or coerced into getting married and do not (or cannot) consent to the marriage. It is very different to an arranged marriage, where the parties have the choice to accept the arrangement or not.
Forced Marriage is an offence and victims can be protected through civil or criminal court proceedings. Information about seeking a Forced Marriage Protection Order can be found here.
The Forced Marriage Unit has specialists to support those affected or concerned about being forced into a marriage and can be contacted on 020 7008 0151.
