Employing a private carer
If you employ your own carer you will need to:
- set up and run payroll, you can pay a payroll provider to do this for you
- take out Employer’s Liability Insurance and Public Liability Insurance
- carryout background checks, for example Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS)
- check the person is legally able to work in the UK
- provide a contract of employment
- provide holiday entitlement and pay, sick pay, maternity/paternity leave and pay
- work place pension scheme
You can use your direct payment to buy insurance or services that are legally required for employing a carer.
