Removal of books from libraries
See notes
Please may you provide me with the following regarding public libraries owned and managed by the council:
1. Have any books been removed from any public library in your council due to the nature of the book?
Clarification was sought on this question as the Library Manager has advised that all items are removed due to their 'nature' as in a combination of, for example, age of the book and damage, and/or declining popularity. The applicant confirmed that what they were looking for related to contents of the books - i.e. the text or illustrations in the book found to be inappropriate or controversial.
In the past 10 years; no books have been removed on the clarified context.
2. If so, please provide the number of books removed, the reason for their removal and the titles of the books.
Not applicable.
3. Please provide any correspondence internally and with anyone outside the council (including libraries, councillors, the public etc.) making reference to or discussing the potential/actual removal of books from public libraries.
No information held.
